Jesus began His public ministry when he was around 30 years old. Coming up out of the water of the Jordan River He was immediately filled with the Holy Spirit. The Lord was then directed by the Holy Spirit to a wilderness area and for the next forty days He fasted and experienced temptation from the enemy.
He overcame and returned “in the power of the Spirit.” His ministry to the public began with power – both in word and deed. Jesus spoke with authority and the crowds were astonished and also signs and wonders followed Him everywhere. He gathered a band of men to follow Him and He began to teach them so that they might continue His ministry. These disciples would need help to accomplish all that Jesus would ask of them because He wasn’t sticking around! In fact He said to them, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.” Jesus served in the power of the Holy Spirit and He wanted the disciples to know by His example, and also experience for themselves the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
Life would throw some tough blows and we need an advantage to overcome, and that advantage is the Helper! Every believer needs to experience the help of the Helper!
