Jesus never came right out and said to the disciples on the night of Passover that He was about to die for their sins, and maybe that’s because He was about to demonstrate it. He said, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”
Many Years ago Charles Wesley penned these words, “Love divine, all loves excelling, Joy of heaven to earth come down! Fix in us Thy humble dwelling, All Thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, Thou art all compassion, Pure unbounded love Thou art. Visit us with Thy salvation, Enter every trembling heart.” This great song writer of a generation long ago understood profoundly the concept and practical expression of “greater love.” Many people desire to hear God tell them, “I love you, my child!” I believe there are times when perhaps He finds a way to express that, but He chose to say it by His actions. “Actions speak louder than words!” they say. In this case, this is true, because His greater love was spoken by action much louder than words. Jesus laid down His life for us.
He was God’s sacrifice for our sin, so that Jesus bore the penalty of God’s wrath against all transgression and sin, and we then could be released, forgiven and saved. “Forgive them, Father!” was the cry of His heart. Truly this divine love excels all other expressions of love for you and I!
