She asks him a really important question about an upcoming event and the response she gets is, “Oh sure, why not … ooohh! They missed!” Obviously, quite connected to this all-important game, that he couldn’t pull himself away from for even a moment, he then asks, “Hey, honey can you bring me another coffee?” This is what I call detached!
The word attached has some interesting meanings. It can mean “enclosed” which means it is fastened or enclosed with something. Attached speaks of being emotionally committed to somebody which calls into question how you respond to them in given situations. Your devotion to someone or something will speak of the level of attachment you have with them. Also attached can mean “touching another structure”, thus sharing a wall with another building, and thus not standing alone. I believe “not standing alone” is partly what Jesus had in mind when He said, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.”
The branch is attached to the vine and therefore depends upon the vine for nourishment, fruitfulness and really life itself. If it become permanently detached it will cease to bear fruit and then it dies. I want my life to matter, to mean something in the end, and here we have the key ingredient to make that happen. Remain attached to Jesus!
