Did you come from a religious background that taught you that you couldn’t really know before you died if you were going to heaven?
My grandmother believed that, and I could never really talk to her about it. She loved the Lord, prayed every day, but died not having assurance. So allow me to ask some simple questions. Can someone know for certain that they will go to heaven when they die? What then does it depend on? If you rely on your good works to please God Almighty and merely hope you get it right and are good enough to “get in”, then there can be no assurance. It’s a toss of a coin! Sorry, for me there is too much at stake to rely on my good behavior. What if God actually provided another way? What if we relied on the finished work of Jesus on the cross? We know that He died for our sins and rose again from the dead (That’s the gospel in a nutshell).
The Bible then says, if believe (that) in our heart and confess it with our mouth, then we shall be saved (Romans 10:9, 10). God takes it a few steps further. He says, “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, …” (Romans 8:16, 17). His Word and His Spirit give us assurance!
