I love that new song we’ve been singing the last few months. “I’m no longer a slave to fear, I am a child of God!” What a powerful truth to absorb into your heart and learn to walk it out in your life. I think it’s based on a verse we find in Galatians 4:7 where Paul writes, “Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”

Allow me to ask you, “What is a slave?” and “What have you been a slave to?” When your life is under the power and control of another person or power and you have lost certain levels of freedom and liberty, you are a slave. Think for a moment of fear, alcohol, gambling, drugs or behavioural habits that control a person and they appear to be unable to break free. One dictionary describes slavery as “involuntary servitude.”

We all used to be slaves to the law of sin and death, but now Paul says, we are sons (or daughters) and heirs. We moved from slavery into “Sonship” by way of adoption through Christ’s redemption of us at the cross, which moved us into a new neighbourhood called “freedom” and we are no longer slaves. We don’t live in that “old neighbourhood” and we no longer play by the old rules. Slaves don’t cry, “Abba” only children do. You are a child of God!
