After Saul’s rebellion the Spirit of the Lord departed from him, and the Bible says that a distressing spirit came upon him. What would that look like today? A person would exhibit distress, anxiety, fear and panic. No one wants to live under that kind of dark cloud.
Saul’s servants suggested they get someone to play some music on a harp to sooth Saul’s distress. Saul’s orders were, “Go find someone!” Listen to what one of the servants said about David. “Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him.”
Look over these beautiful characteristics once again. Wow, what an example David was living. He played well, lived well, spoke well and fought well. More importantly it says that the Lord is with him. It’s great when the Lord is on your side, because that usually means you have responded to His call and actually joined His team. Anyway, it worked! David was able to minister and serve king Saul, and through the spirit of worship peace would come on Saul and the distressing spirit would depart. “So David came to Saul and stood before him. And he loved him greatly, and he became his armorbearer.” This is just another great example David left for all of us to copy.
